The figure is not yet final since there are still a few hours left in this year 2020 but we already know that we have a record. No less than 100 billion dollars, or 81.32 billion euros, have been spent worldwide on mobile applications ( app or in-app purchases). An increase of at least 20% compared to 2019 (83.5 billion dollars, or 67.89 billion euros).

The Christmas period is the high point of spending the year on mobile applications since, according to the SensorTower study, it represents a turnover of $ 407.6 million, or 40% of the annual turnover!

With an increase of 34.5% even stronger than the overall annual increase, we can now say that this period is preferred by consumers to afford their games, subscriptions and other expensive applications – the purchase of new smartphones also helps. obviously.

The big winner of this final sprint is the video game sector: of the 407.6 million spent in recent weeks, 295.6 million are spent on video games!

A second SensorTower study details spending by category and, in the entertainment sector, it is PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings which take the lion’s share with respectively 2.6 billion and 2.5 billion dollars in turnover. business between January 1 and December 14, 2020. If we add to that the Christmas expenses…

All these figures come from statistics from the Google Play Store and the App Store, Apple, which creates a gray area: the firm does not have access to Chinese alternative Android application stores.

With a population of 1.4 billion people fond of their smartphones and a multitude of stores available, there is no doubt that the figures must be revised upwards.
