Hyundai intends to become a key manufacturer in the electric vehicle segment. His new Ioniq 5 is full of techno to impress.

(Update 02/23/2021 at 8:22 am) New Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Big electric offensive at Hyundai, which will be offering a brand new Ioniq with tempting features next spring.

Often regarded as a “follower” and not an “innovative” manufacturer, Hyundai is however, at the present time, the only one to offer so many different energy sources on our market to drive the vehicles in its wide range. Thermal (gasoline and diesel), MHEV (48V light hybridization), classic hybrid (non-rechargeable), PHEV (rechargeable hybrid), electric and even hydrogen, the Korean manufacturer sells absolutely everything.

Tesla in the viewfinder

In order to establish its reputation in the now competitive global electric car market, the Ioniq 5 is putting forward various solutions that could be attractive. Above all, it displays a style that creates a real break with that of existing models. By changing generation, the Ioniq also changes category, going from 4.47 m to 4.65 m for 1.89 m wide and 1.60 high. It is clear, it is now targeting the Tesla Model 3 (4.69 m) which is a resounding success with electrophile around the world.

Ultra-fast charging

To counter the American, the Asian is counting on its on-board technology, its electrical machines and especially its very high voltage battery (800V) which would allow record recharging times. Indeed, according to the Korean manufacturer, the two batteries offered (58 or 72.6 kWh) would accept a fast charge of 220 kW which would allow it to recover 80% of its capacity in just 18 minutes or 100 km of autonomy in just 5 minutes. We still have to find the Ionity charger, a charging network in which Hyundai has invested, developing such a capacity. But the consortium promises terminals of up to 350 kW. Record charging times and Hyundai announces a range of around 500 km according to the WLTP cycle even if the car is not yet approved. On the engine side, it will be offered in France in two-wheel drive (propulsion) version of 125 kW (170 hp) or four-wheel drive version of 155 kW (211 hp).

New platform

Based on a brand new platform called E-GMP , entirely dedicated to electric vehicles, the Ioniq 5 installs its batteries in the floor for better weight distribution and a center of gravity located as low as possible , which normally benefits handling and driving pleasure. Like the Volkswagen Group and its MEB technical base, also dedicated to electric vehicles like the ID.3, it has a flat floor and promises great comfort for driver and passengers with, in particular, generous legroom thanks to a wheelbase stretching over 3 m. Luggage is not left out with two boxes, one at the back and one at the front, revealing 560 liters of cargo volume , enough to leave with the family.

Eco-responsible materials

Obviously technophile, the Ioniq 5 receives a central 12.5 ”touch screen allowing to manage all the infotainment and navigation functions as well as to visualize the battery charge level and offers an ecological approach by using , for example, recycled materials made from plastic bottles, wool or leather for the seats and armrests.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 price

Scheduled for May 2021 in Europe and manufactured in Ulsan in South Korea, the Ioniq 5 should sell for around € 38,000 in basic version.
