Partnership with Google, digital campus, range dedicated to carsharing, energy production: Renault wants to diversify up to 20% of its turnover.
Adapting a phrase from Jeff Bezos about Amazon, Luca de Meo, chief executive officer of Renault, assures us: “Renault is not a car manufacturer that uses technology, but a technology company that makes cars”.
Concretely, Clotilde Delbos, financial director, will have a heavy load of finding 20% of turnover resulting from new activities. Here it is loaded with this mysterious new brand, Mobilize. In fact, a branch dedicated to “new forms of mobility”: car-sharing, vehicles with Uber-type drivers, new forms of rental to customers who no longer want to buy cars.
In addition to Renault and Dacia sedans, Mobilize will have specific vehicles: the Ace, with two seats, and a delivery van equipped with an innovative unloading system. In addition, Renault wants to acquire a “Software Republic”, employing a thousand engineers with a group of partners in the digital sector. Orange, Atos, and Google are already on board. Objective: to digitize vehicles in order to better connect, operate, drive, and finance them, with the support of the in-house bank.
Another source of diversification: recycling batteries, energy production, extending the lifespan of vehicles. This is the new vocation of the Flins plant, which builds the Zoe, the group’s electric star, and is already mourning the future loss of its assembly lines. A goal has already been set: make a Zoe reach a million kilometers. A nice symbol. And perhaps, on a large scale, a new “business”.
