To finally try to overshadow Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, Samsung should launch in 2022 an Exynos SoC equipped with an AMD GPU.
On the sidelines of the announcement of its new SoC Exynos 2100, its first chip engraved in 5 nm, Samsung returned to its partnership with the founder AMD, which had been formalized in June 2019 and about which we have not had much news since.
Samsung and AMD hand in hand
Samsung executive and chairman of the group’s semiconductor business, Dr. Inyup Kang, confirmed that engineers from Samsung and AMD are working together. However, we will have to be a little more patient before seeing the results of this alliance.
Also according to Inyup Kang, the new generation AMD GPU for mobile will be present in the next “ flagship product” of the Korean manufacturer. However, it remains for our interpretation to understand what this means. Samsung will indeed launch three high-end smartphones this year: the Z Fold 3, the Note 21, and the Z Flip 2. But these devices will probably carry an Exynos 2100; also Kang could actually refer to something other than a motive.
Probably not before 2022
The most likely is therefore that in early 2022, Samsung will present a new Exynos SoC integrating an AMD GPU for the graphics part, which will be integrated into the smartphones of the Galaxy S22 series first, then to the brand’s other premium devices launched this year. year.
Samsung seems to want to put the Exynos back in the spotlight, which has long been eclipsed by Qualcomm’s Snapdragons. It starts with the Exynos 2100, which performs much better than last year’s Exynos 990 and which could compete with the Snapdragon 888 according to early benchmarks.
And in 2022, Samsung could strike a big blow in the market if this collaboration with AMD bears fruit.
